Difference Between Aerobic Respiration and Anaerobic Respiration

Cells release energy from glucose either with oxygen (aerobic) or without it (anaerobic).

Why does aerobic respiration release more energy?
Aerobic respiration completely oxidises glucose to CO₂ and water using oxygen, extracting almost all its chemical energy (~38 ATP). Anaerobic respiration only partly breaks glucose down, so it releases much less.
What is anaerobic respiration in muscles?
During heavy exercise when oxygen is scarce, muscle cells respire anaerobically, converting glucose to lactic acid. The build-up of lactic acid causes muscle fatigue and cramps.
